Leadership Training

The goal of this activity is to help participants identify their own personal missions.
flipchart and marking pen
tent cards and pen/pencil for each pair of participants
Clock 20 minutes
To help people get started, lead a quick brainstorming session asking each person to share a verb while you write these on the flipchart. Start the list with such words as
ignite
enable
affirm
monitor
sustain
grow
support
Then brainstorm nouns:
technology
people
customers
learning
products
knowledge
Ask the group members to create a personal mission statement using three verbs and one noun. Explain that they can add words to make the statement more meaningful; for example, Create, Teach and Encourage Compliance Standards makes more sense if it s written Create, Teach and Encourage Compliance to Company Standards . It is best to make these as specific as you can, so adding adjectives and adverbs is fine. Give people 10 minutes or so (watch to see when people have finished). Play some quiet instrumental music while people work on this.
Give each participant a tent card. Ask them to partner off and share their personal mission statements. Have the pairs work together to refine and clarify their personal missions. When they are content with what they have, ask them to write their mission statement boldly (in marker) on the front of the tent card.
