Learning Activity 10 5: Behavioural Style

Goal

The goal of this activity is to begin to assess the participants individual behavioural styles.

Materials

  • Assessment Assessment 11 2: Quick n Dirty DISC/PIAV

  • PowerPoint Item PowerPoint slides 8 12 through 8 17 (depending on length of programme)

  • flipchart and marking pen

Time

  • Clock 20 minutes

Instructions

Distribute Assessment 11 2: Quick n Dirty DISC/PIAV (Chapter 11, page 170). Ask participants to circle all the words on both pages that they feel apply to them. If you are holding the two-day programme, show PowerPoint slide 8 13 while they do this. Explain that a higher number of words circled in a quadrant suggests that they exhibit more of this type of behaviour, but note that this is not scientific. Ask people to notice the quadrant with the most circles, as well as any quadrants with none.

Explain that sometimes a good way to jumpstart understanding oneself is through assessments. DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance) assessments measure how a person behaves and how others would describe his or her behaviour. PIAV (Personal Interests, Attitudes, Values) assessments measure how a person prioritizes, to what he or she is drawn, and what he or she avoids. This assessment is a nonscientific shortcut to get people thinking about their own difference. It is highly recommended, especially in the longer version of the workshop, that you license and use the full DISC and PIAV profiles from a distributor in order to get adequate depth of understanding.
