Learning Activity 10 1: Understanding Leadership

Goals

The goals of this activity are to

  • introduce the concept of leadership

  • begin to identify each participant s leadership strengths and weaknesses

  • be aware of the 10 leadership competencies.

Materials

  • flipchart and marking pen

Time

  • Clock 20 minutes

Instructions

Ask the people in the room to divide into groups of three to five members and choose their group leaders. Explain to them that the leaders will be the person in each group with the most children obviously a person with a great deal of leadership experience. If a group has a tie, ask it to use the greatest number of pets as a tiebreaker.

Now explain that each team will have three minutes to discuss and plan before the project begins. Then flip to the following project instructions that you have printed on a flipchart (if you prefer, you could add a page with these instructions to your PowerPoint file, but I prefer that the learners do not have a copy so it is more of a surprise): The goal of your project is to build the tallest structure possible with the coins currently in the possession of your team. You will have five minutes to complete the project.

Explain that they will have five minutes to implement the project after planning. Immediately instruct the team to begin planning. Act as if there is no need for further instruction. If a team comes to you with questions, answer them individually.
