Chapter 2: Fluid Mechanics

The following topics are reviewed in this chapter: fluid statics and pressure measurement, flow measurement, Bernoulli's theorem, and fluid flow and transportation.

Viscosity

Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid to shear or angular deformation. The shear stress between two adjacent layers of a newtonian fluid varies as the rate of shear at constant temperature and pressure:

where ?

= shear stress, lbf/ft 2

g c

= Newton's law proportionality factor, lb ft/s 2 lbf

u

= linear velocity, ft/s

y

= distance perpendicular to the direction of flow, ft

?

= viscosity, lb/ft s

The conversion factors for viscosity from one system of units into the others are given in Table 1-3.
