Chemical Engineering License Review, Second Edition

The following topics are reviewed in this chapter: fluid statics and pressure measurement, flow measurement, Bernoulli's theorem, and fluid flow and transportation.
Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid to shear or angular deformation. The shear stress between two adjacent layers of a newtonian fluid varies as the rate of shear at constant temperature and pressure:
| where ? | = shear stress, lbf/ft 2 |
| g c | = Newton's law proportionality factor, lb ft/s 2 lbf |
| u | = linear velocity, ft/s |
| y | = distance perpendicular to the direction of flow, ft |
| ? | = viscosity, lb/ft s |
The conversion factors for viscosity from one system of units into the others are given in Table 1-3.
