Chapter 16: Experimental Chemistry

16.1 VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS

Volumetric analysis or volumetry is the branch of analytical chemistry in which measurement by volume is the main and final operation.

In volumetry reactants are taken in the form of solution and the volume of the standard solution ( solution whose strength is known) required to react completely, with a known (definite) volume of the unknown solution ( solution whose strength is to be determined) is found out. The strength of the known solution can be calculated with the help of normality equation N 1V 1 = N 2V 2 where N 1 and N 2 are the normalities, and V 1 and V 2 are the volumes of two solutions respectively.

16.1.1 Terms Used in Volumetric Analysis

Following are some commonly used terms in Volumetric Analysis:

  1. Titration is the process of adding the standard solution from burette to the known volume of unknown solution until the chemical reaction is just complete.

  2. Standard solution is a solution of definite concentration or of known strength.

  3. Standardization is a process whereby the concentration of a solution is determined by the known concentration of a solution.

  4. Titrate is the unknown solution. It is generally taken in a conical flask.

  5. Titrant is a solution of accurately known concentration. This standard solution is generally taken in a burette and run into an unknown solution till the reaction is just complete.

  6. Indicator is a substance which helps...
