Access Link (A Link)
A communications line (link) that provides access from a service switching point (SSP) and signaling control point (SCP) to signaling transfer points (STPs) in an SS7 network.
Access Tandem (AT)
A high level switching system that interconnects low level (local exchange) switching systems. An access tandem can also provide access for nonconforming end offices such as for equal access to other long distance service providers.
ACD

ACM
See: Address Complete Message
Active Signaling Link
A signaling link that is being used in the Signaling System 7 system that has completed the initial alignment procedures and is transporting or ready to transport signaling messages.
Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation (ADPCM)
A process of converting analog voice signals into encoded digital signals through the use of predictive codes that are created by analyzing the previous digital audio signals. ADPCM is derived from the original pulse code modulation (PCM) system that commonly represents an analog signal as 64 kbps (called a DS0). ADPCM systems commonly provide digital signals at 32 kbps and 16 kbps.
ADC
See: Analog to Digital Converter
Address Complete Message (ACM)
An ISDN User Part trunk signaling message by which a call s destination SSP acknowledges an initial address message.
Address Translation Gateway
A gateway that can convert the address format (field and/or physical layer structure) from one network to another.
