A system that can connect incoming and outgoing digital lines together through the use of temporary memory locations. For an ESS system, a computer controls the assignment, storage, and retrieval of memory locations so that a portion of an incoming line (time slot) can be stored in temporary memory and retrieved for insertion to an outgoing line.

End Office (EO)
The end office interconnects calls between local customers and the telephone network. Each end office switch can usually supply service up to 10,000 customers. In larger areas (such as a city), established LECs may have several EO switches. The EO switches are interconnected using a higher level tandem switch. If is a significant amount of calls regularly processed between end offices, they may be directly connected via high-speed communication lines (trunks).
Enhanced 800 Services
A call processing service that allows for the routing of 800 (or other toll free or freephone numbers) to be routed to different locations based on other criteria such as day, time of day, or caller location.

Equipment Identity Register (EIR)
A database in a GSM telecommunications network that contains the identity of telecommunications devices (such as mobile phones) and the status of these devices in the network (such as authorized or not-authorized). The EIR is primarily used to identify mobile phones that may have been stolen or have questionable usage patterns that may indicate fraudulent use.
