- Tandem Free Operation (TFO)
- Tandem free operation involves the direct connection of switching centers in mobile communication system without the need to decompress and re-compress (transcoding) speech information. TFO overcomes the challenges of cascading the speech coding process. Each time speech information is compressed and decompressed, some audio distortion occurs and time delay is added.The logical function for coordinating TFO is the transcoder rate adaption unit (TRAU). The TRAU is usually located in the MSC (it is possible to put the TRAU in the base station) and it negotiates the ability of the MSC to use TFO with another MSC. The TRAU is also responsible for disabling TFO if the call is transferred to another MSC or system that is not capable of TFO.
