CEE | Devices follow Certification of Electrical Equipment (CEE) configuration standards. CEE is a European standard.
IEC | Devices follow International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) configuration standards. The IEC is an authoritative worldwide body responsible for developing consensus global standards in the electrotechnical field. IEC is dedicated to the harmonization and voluntary adoption of these standards, supporting the transfer of electro technology, assisting certification and promoting international trade. Since 1906, IEC has served the world's electrical industry, developing international standards to promote quality, safety, performance, reproducibility, and environmental compatibility of materials, products, and systems. It has also published standards for the electronics and telecommunications industries. The IEC's present membership of 51 countries includes most major trading nations. IEC standards are widely adopted as the basis of national or regional electrotechnical standards, and are often quoted in manufacturers' specifications and by users when calling for tenders. Over 2000 standards cover virtually every topic of electro technology from acoustics, to medical devices, to insulating materials, to aircraft, to nuclear instruments. The electrotechnical standards organizations of each participating country make up its membership, with ANSI representing the United States.
NEMA | Devices follow NEMA configuration standards. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) sets safety standards for electrical cabling and connectors.
JIS | Devices follow the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS).
Other | Other unlisted, specialized, or proprietary types or configurations.

Your choices are... | |||
Plug / Inlet | Plugs or male connectors are often referred to as header or free connectors. In coaxial RF connectors, the plug is normally the movable portion and is usually attached to a cable or removable sub-assembly. In shell-type multiple-contact connectors, the plug usually contains the socket contacts and is mounted on the "hot" (rack) side of the system. Plugs mate with receptacles, jacks, outlets, etc.
Receptacle / Outlet | Receptacles, outlets, or jacks are female connecting devices into which plugs are inserted to make circuit connections.

Mounting Style | |||
Your choices are... | |||
DIN Rail Mounted | Devices mount on a standard DIN rail. DIN is an acronym for Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), a German national organization for standardization.
Panel Mounted | Devices fit a depression within a panel so that they are flush or nearly flush with the panel. Typically, these devices are used in applications that require connectors to fit panel cutouts.
Flush Mounted | Devices are installed flush with the surface of a panel or piece of equipment.
Bulkhead Mounted | Devices include a plate or bulkhead for mounting.
Wall / Box Mounted | Devices are threaded for an accessory (backshell) and intended for permanent mounting. They are usually flanged.
In-Line / Cable End | Devices mount at the end of an electrical cable.
Flange Mounted | Devices are equipped with integral flanges for mounting with external hardware such as screws, bolts, or rails. They attach by bolting the flange or riveting it in place through holes in the flange surface. Flange mounted plugs are called flange inlets. Flange mounted receptacles are called flanged outlets.
PCB Mounted | Through hole technology (THT) mounts components on a printed circuit board (PCB) by inserting component leads through holes in the board and then soldering the leads in place on the opposite side of the board. Surface mount technology (SMT) adds components to a printed circuit board (PCB) by soldering component leads or terminals to the top surface of the board. SMT components have a flat surface that is soldered to a flat pad on the face of the PCB. Typically, the PCB pad is coated with a paste-like formulation of solder and flux. With careful placement, SMT components on solder paste remain in position until elevated temperatures, usually from an infrared oven, melt the paste and solder the component leads to the PCB pads.

Terminals | Terminals are devices that terminate a conductor. They attach to posts, studs, or other conductors in order to establish an electrical connection.
Your choices are... | |||
Cage Clamp | Electrical connections are made using a cage clamp.
Crimp | Crimp is the physical compression (deformation) of a contact wire barrel around a conductor to make an electrical and mechanical connection to the conductor.
IDC | Insulation displacement connectors (ICD) slice through cable insulation to make a connection. Forcing an insulated conductor into a restrictive slot in the connection part of the contact displaces the insulation so that the bare wire engages the sides of the slot. IDCs are mass termination connectors for flat cables and eliminate the need to strip insulation.
PCB Solder | Electrical connection is made by soldering wires onto a printed circuit board (PCB).
Screw | Electrical connections are made using screws.
Lugs | Electrical connections are made using lugs.
Solder Cup or Solder | Solder cups are terminal ends or contacts into which conductors are inserted before soldering. A metal or metallic alloy is used to join metal surfaces together. Normally, a 60-40 rosin core (60% tin and 40% lead) is used for soldering electronic assemblies. Soldering is a wet process.
Tabs | Electrical connections are made through quick connect tabs.
Wire Wrap | Electrical connections are made by wrapping a stripped or unstripped solid wire around a terminal post that contains a series of sharp edges. This solderless process requires a special wrapping tool.
Other | Other unlisted terminal types.

Grounding
Back to Top
![]() |
![]() | ||
Proper grounding provides a safe path for electricity to move from a defective outlet, fixture, appliance or tool back into the earth, which is a very good electrical conductor.
Your choices are... | |||
Non-Grounding | Devices do not have a ground terminal.
Standard Grounding | Devices have a standard embedded ground terminal.
Isolated Ground | Devices use a ground path that is isolated from the facility's grounding system. Isolated ground circuits increase the resistance of sensitive electronics to surges. They also provide a clear grounding path to the service panel and help reduce electromagnetic noise that can interfere with equipment operation. With receptacles, the grounding connection is isolated from the mounting strap.
Self-Grounding | Self-grounding devices establish a connection to an existing grounding path such as a metal wiring device or metal conduit, gas or water piping, or ducting or structural steel.
GFCI | Ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacles include a build-in circuit that detects leakage current to ground on the load side of the device. When leakage current is detected, GFCI interrupts power and prevents hazardous ground fault conditions. GFCI devices conform to UL Standard 943 Class A requirements. National Electric Code NFPA-70 requires their use in a variety or indoor and outdoor locations.
Other | Other unlisted grounding types.
