MULTIBUS®  (I & II) Single Board Computers (SBC)

Description

MULTIBUS® Single Board Computers (SBC) are modular systems designed to hold various modules within a backplane crate system. These boards are equipped with Intel processors such as the 8086, 8088, 80186, and 80386, and are available in different configurations, including Multibus I and Multibus II. The Multibus II boards, in particular, are 32-bit microprocessor buses capable of operating at 80MBps, and they come in two sizes: 3U x 220mm and 6U x 220mm. These boards are designed to meet most industry specifications and are capable of working together without bus timing or loading issues .

Working Principle

MULTIBUS® SBCs operate by interconnecting various components through a data bus, which facilitates communication between the processor and multibus interface cards. The boards use a backplane system to hold modules, similar to computer automated measurement and control (CAMC) systems. Multibus II boards offer software-controlled jumper options, enhancing flexibility and ease of configuration compared to the conventional jumper or wire-wrapping techniques used in Multibus I .

Applications

MULTIBUS® boards are utilized in a variety of applications, including air traffic control systems, communication systems, and logical applications. These boards are particularly suited for environments that require reliable and standardized modular systems .

Advantages over other Single Board Computers (SBC)

One of the key advantages of MULTIBUS® SBCs, particularly the Multibus II, is their ability to handle 32-bit data at high speeds of up to 80MBps, which is beneficial for applications requiring fast data processing. Additionally, the software-controlled jumper options in Multibus II provide greater flexibility and ease of use compared to other SBCs that rely on manual jumper settings .

Limitations

While MULTIBUS® SBCs offer several advantages, they also have limitations. The need for adherence to specific industry standards can limit their flexibility in certain custom applications. Additionally, the physical size of the boards, particularly the larger 6U x 220mm configuration, may not be suitable for all installations .
