Oxygen Industrial Gases
Description
Oxygen industrial gases are primarily used to supply oxygen in large volumes for various industrial processes. These gases are typically stored and transported in compressed gas cylinders or generated on-site using oxygen generators to meet the demand for high-purity oxygen.
Working Principle
Oxygen is generated from ambient air, which contains approximately 20.9% oxygen, through methods such as cryogenic fractional distillation, Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA), or membrane separation. In cryogenic distillation, air is cooled to extremely low temperatures to liquefy its components, allowing for the separation of oxygen from other gases like nitrogen and argon. This process is highly efficient and is responsible for a significant portion of the global oxygen supply .
Applications
Oxygen industrial gases are used in a wide range of applications. In the steel industry, oxygen is used in furnaces for heat treatment, annealing, and sintering processes . In the medical field, oxygen is essential for breathing cylinders and enclosed spaces in hospitals . Additionally, oxygen is used in aquaculture to improve oxygen levels in water, enhancing fish farming productivity . In the pulp and paper industry, oxygen is utilized for delignification and other manufacturing processes .
Advantages over other Industrial Gases
Oxygen has specific advantages over other industrial gases due to its reactivity and ability to support combustion. For instance, in metal fabrication, oxygen is used in oxy-acetylene torches to produce extremely hot flames for cutting and welding, which is not possible with inert gases like nitrogen or argon . This makes oxygen indispensable in processes requiring high temperatures.
Limitations
One limitation of oxygen industrial gases is the need for careful handling and storage due to their reactive nature. Oxygen supports combustion, which can pose safety risks if not managed properly. Additionally, the infrastructure required for cryogenic distillation or on-site generation can be complex and costly .
Considerations
When considering the use of oxygen industrial gases, it is important to evaluate the initial costs of setting up oxygen generation systems, which can be significant. Operating expenses include energy costs for running generators or maintaining cryogenic systems. Durability and accuracy of the equipment are crucial for ensuring consistent oxygen supply. Regular maintenance and replacement of parts are necessary to prevent downtime and ensure safety. Proper training in handling and storage is also essential to mitigate risks associated with oxygen's reactive properties .
