Thin film pressure transmitters are devices that measure pressure by utilizing a thin layer of material deposited on a substrate. This technology is known for its compact design and good temperature stability, making it suitable for long-term use and harsh measurement conditions.

Working Principle

Thin film pressure transmitters operate by applying resistors to a stainless-steel membrane. When pressure is applied, the membrane deforms, causing a change in resistance that is measured and converted into an electrical signal. This method provides high resistance to overpressure, high temperatures, and vibrations, making these transmitters particularly useful in high-pressure environments up to several thousand bar .

Applications

Thin film pressure transmitters are used in a variety of applications where durability and stability are crucial. Specific examples include industrial environments where high pressure and temperature conditions are prevalent, such as in oil and gas exploration, chemical processing, and power generation.

Advantages over other Pressure Transmitters

Thin film pressure transmitters offer several advantages over other types of pressure sensors. They are more resistant to overpressure, high temperatures, and vibrations compared to piezoresistive silicon sensors, which are not very shock resistant . Additionally, thin film sensors are suitable for higher pressure ranges, making them ideal for demanding industrial applications.

Limitations

One limitation of thin film pressure transmitters is their complexity in generating a vacuum behind the metal diaphragm, which makes them unsuitable for use as absolute pressure sensors .

Considerations

When considering thin film pressure transmitters, it is important to evaluate factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, and maintenance requirements. These transmitters are generally durable and offer good temperature stability, which can reduce long-term maintenance costs. However, the initial investment may be higher compared to other types of pressure sensors. Additionally, their resistance to harsh conditions can lead to lower replacement costs over time, making them a cost-effective choice for specific applications.
