Variable Capacitance Pressure Transmitters

Description

Variable capacitance pressure transmitters are devices that measure pressure by detecting changes in capacitance. They utilize a diaphragm element that moves in response to pressure changes, which in turn alters the capacitance between the diaphragm and a reference plate. This change in capacitance is used to determine the pressure level.

Working Principle

Variable capacitance pressure transmitters operate by using a thin diaphragm as one plate of a capacitor. When pressure is applied, the diaphragm deflects, causing a change in the capacitance between the diaphragm and a fixed reference plate. This change in capacitance is detected by a bridge circuit, which converts it into an electrical signal. The signal is then processed through various circuits to produce an output current proportional to the pressure. This technology is useful because it provides good accuracy, linearity, hysteresis, repeatability, and stability, making it suitable for precise pressure measurements .

They also consume less power because there is no DC current flowing through the sensor element, which is advantageous for designing low-power sensing systems. This makes them suitable for remote or implanted medical applications where power efficiency is crucial .

Limitations

Variable capacitance pressure transmitters have some limitations, including potentially high impedance output and sensitivity to temperature changes, which necessitates ambient temperature compensation. They also require custom electronics to produce a stable output and may be susceptible to long-term drift due to their analog sensor design .

Considerations

When considering variable capacitance pressure transmitters, it is important to evaluate factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, and maintenance requirements. These transmitters may have higher production costs due to the complexity of their signal conditioning circuits and calibration algorithms.
