Cold Plate Heat Sinks
Last Updated: April 1, 2025
Description
Cold plate heat sinks are devices designed to absorb and dissipate heat from electronic components or systems. They function by transferring heat away from the source to maintain optimal operating temperatures and prevent overheating.
Working Principle
Cold plate heat sinks operate by transferring heat from the device to a liquid coolant that flows through the plate. This liquid absorbs the heat and carries it to a remote heat exchanger, where it dissipates into the ambient air or another liquid in a secondary cooling system. The internal design, such as mini-channel fins, enhances the surface area for heat transfer, ensuring efficient thermal management with low-pressure drop characteristics .
Applications
Cold plate heat sinks are used in various applications, including motor drive cooling, power conversion, and laser and sensor cooling. They are also employed in computer or server microprocessor cooling, test equipment thermal management, and lightweight avionics. In more electric aircraft (MEA), they help in electronic heat transport to stowed radiator panels during satellite launch .
Advantages over other Heat Sinks
Cold plate heat sinks offer superior thermal performance compared to traditional heat sinks. For instance, the ATS-CP series can improve thermal performance by more than 30% compared to commercially available cold plates, thanks to their advanced mini-channel fin design . They also provide uniform cold plate surface temperature and minimize thermal resistance between the cold plate and heat source .
Limitations
One limitation of cold plate heat sinks is their dependency on a liquid cooling system, which can introduce complexity and potential points of failure compared to passive cooling solutions. Additionally, they may require more space and infrastructure to accommodate the liquid cooling components.
Considerations
When considering cold plate heat sinks, it's important to evaluate initial costs, which can be higher due to the complexity of the liquid cooling system. Operating expenses may also increase due to the need for pumps and maintenance of the liquid cooling system. However, they offer durability and accuracy in maintaining optimal temperatures, which can extend the lifespan of electronic components. Replacement and maintenance costs should also be considered, as the liquid cooling system may require periodic checks and potential component replacements to ensure continued performance.
