An instance cannot be modified on the Stage. As mentioned earlier, you can no longer use the Eraser, Ink Bottle or Paint Bucket tools on it or change the stroke and fill colors. You can no longer use the Lasso or Subselection tools to select small sections of this symbol, nor can you reshape the outline with the Arrow tool.
However, it is possible to alter the original symbol after it has been created. This is done in Edit Symbol mode.
There are several ways to enter Edit Symbol mode:
double click the symbol s icon in the Library to open the symbol in isolation;
select the symbol in the Library panel and then Edit from the Options menu at the top right-hand side;
double click the symbol on the Stage to edit it in the context of the rest of your design on the Stage. This is a shortcut for Edit > Edit in Place, which allows you to see your scene in the background while you are editing.
To exit Edit Symbol mode, click on the word Scene1 on the left of the Edit Bar above the Stage to go back to the main Stage. You could also click on the Back button at the left of the Edit bar or choose Select Edit > Edit Document.
