Kerr Cell
An electronic light intensity modulator or fast acting photographic shutter that exploits Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization of an electromagnetic wave (or light or infra-red) caused by an electric field applied in a transverse direction to an appropriate transparent material (solid or fluid) carrying the wave. The rotation of the plane of polarization causes the intensity of the wave to be changed when it passes through a fixed position polarizing filter.
Key Frame Effect
A video effect consisting of a series of effects snapshots called key frames. When the overall effect is replayed, the video processing system automatically and gradually dissolves from one key frame to the next. A process called interleaving defines what happens between key frames. The result is an animation effect.
Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
Metrics (measurements) established by upper management to determine the accomplishment of objectives set for organizational units (e.g. Marketing KPIs may include Net Customer Adds, Net Churn, Total Revenue, etc.).
Key Service Unit (KSU)
The central operating unit of a key telephone system (KTS) or non-PBX/ACD telephone system (small customer premises telephone switch).
