An electronic light intensity modulator or fast acting photographic shutter that exploits Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization of an electromagnetic wave (or light or infra-red) caused by an electric field applied in a transverse direction to an appropriate transparent material (solid or fluid) carrying the wave. The rotation of the plane of polarization causes the intensity of the wave to be changed when it passes through a fixed position polarizing filter.
