Zener Breakdown

In a semiconductor junction, a sudden nondestructive current breakdown that results when the electric field in the barrier region is sufficiently high to cause avalanche current multiplication that greatly increases the number of mobile carriers. See Avalanche.

Zener Diode

A type of semiconductor diode, usually fabricated of silicon, in which reverse voltage breakdown results from the avalanche breakdown phenomenon. Named for American physicist Clarence Zener. The silicon in a Zener diode is typically intentionally made with extremely high doping levels so the negative voltage breakdown will occur at a low voltage such as 3 to 10 volts. Zener diodes are also designed with good heat dissipating capacity to prevent overheating due to their high power dissipation. In this breakdown mode, a Zener diode provides a constant voltage that is useful as an accurate voltage comparison or reference, or in a voltage regulator circuit.

Zero Byte Time Slot Interchange (ZBTSI)

A technique for achieving clear channel capability on DS-1 facilities. This is a method of pre-processing the binary data in a DS-1 bit stream so that AMI line coding can be used but there is no zeroes density limitation on the bit stream. ZBTSI permits the DS-1 link to carry any desired bit stream in each channel, even a stream consisting of all binary zeroes. This capability is sometimes called unrestricted or clear channel.
