U: U Law Encoding UWB

U Law Encoding

The type of non-linear digital voice coding (digital signal companding) that is commonly used in the Americas and other parts of the world. The U Law (pronounced Mu Law) coding process is used to compress the 13 bit sampling of a digitized audio signal into the equivalent of an 8 bit sample. It does this by assigning a non-binary (non-linear) value to each of the binary bits. Another non-linear voice coding system is the A Law coding system that is used in Europe and other parts of the world.
