Practical Filters and Couplers: A Collection from Applied Microwave & Wireless

Introduction

Practical Filters and Couplers is the first collection in a series of design guides compiled from articles published in Applied Microwave & Wireless magazine (AMW). In a 1998 guest editorial in AMW, Randy Rhea discussed the problem of rediscovery. With an increasing number of publication formats and the passage of time, it is difficult for each of us to stay aware of previously solved problems. Even when we recall having seen a solution, finding it is often difficult. As a result, engineering effort is wasted on the rediscovery of solutions. The AMW design guides are a collection of timeless and interesting work organized by specific disciplines within the RF, microwave and wireless field, such as filters and couplers, to help you avoid rediscovery and therefore work more effectively.

Some of the articles were selected because they review important techniques, such as RF Capacitive-Coupled Filters by Rosenbaum. Others were selected because they solve practical problems, for example, Build Filters Without PC Boards by Kurzrok. A third selection criteria is the presentation of original ideas, such as A New Approach to Broadband Transmission Line Hybrid Design by London.

Basic concepts are reviewed in Matching Double-Tuned LC Filters by Breed and RF Capacitive-Coupled Filters by Rosenbaum, who shows that this common band-pass filter topology is one of the simplest types to implement in production. Bridging Coupling Helps to Correct Amplitude Symmetry by Kurzrok reviews the use of cross-coupling to improve the selectivity of a pure ladder structure. Design of a Constant...
