Other scopes have similar controls, but some details of the following instructions might differ slightly with various models.
Usually a separable power cord must be plugged into the back of the scope, and then the other end goes into a 120V ac wall socket. A switch marked "Power" is turned on. (On some new equipment, the switch is marked with a circle having a vertical line inside it, which signifies "one or zero," in other words, "on or off.") It takes a few minutes for the CRT to warm up and operate properly.
A long, narrow cable, usually black, has a chrome plated connector on one end and an alligator clip at the other. The chrome connector is called a "BNC" type, but those letters do not stand for anything (the origin is obscure). On the front of the scope are several BNC corresponding connectors, and one is marked "CH2, Y." It has two very small metal pins sticking up and down from its outer cylinder. The BNC on the black cable must be oriented so that two grooves in its outer cylinder line up with those two pins (usually vertically), and then the cable BNC is pushed firmly onto the BNC on the scope.
