Vortex (Shedding) Meter Gas Flow Meters
Last Updated: April 1, 2025
Description
Vortex (Shedding) Meter Gas Flow Meters are devices used to measure the flow rate of gases by detecting the frequency of vortices shed from a bluff body placed in the flow path. These meters are known for their ability to provide accurate flow measurements without the need for moving parts, making them robust and reliable in various conditions.
Working Principle
Vortex shedding flowmeters operate by placing a blunt obstruction, known as a bluff body, in the path of the flowing gas. As the gas flows around this obstruction, vortices are created alternately on each side. The frequency at which these vortices are shed is directly proportional to the velocity of the gas flow. This frequency is measured and used to calculate the flow rate. The absence of moving parts in the vortex meter design contributes to its durability and reliability, making it suitable for a wide range of media, including gases, liquids, and steam .
Applications
Vortex shedding meters are widely used in various industries for measuring gas flow. Specific applications include monitoring natural gas flow in pipelines, measuring steam flow in power plants, and controlling air flow in HVAC systems. Their ability to handle high temperatures and pressures makes them ideal for use in harsh industrial environments .
Advantages over other Electrical Products
Vortex flow meters offer several advantages over other types of flow measurement devices. They are unaffected by changes in pressure, temperature, and density, which can affect other measurement technologies. Additionally, their rugged construction and lack of moving parts result in a longer service life and reduced maintenance requirements. Vortex meters also provide good accuracy across a wide range of flow rates, making them versatile for different applications .
Limitations
Despite their advantages, vortex flow meters have some limitations. They require long inlet and outlet runs to ensure accurate measurements, and their performance can be compromised by pulsating flows. Additionally, they are not suitable for measuring highly viscous fluids and may struggle with accuracy at very low flow rates due to the absence of vortex shedding .
Considerations
When considering the use of vortex flow meters, it is important to evaluate factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, and maintenance requirements. While the initial cost may be higher than some other flow measurement technologies, the durability and low maintenance needs can offset these costs over time. The accuracy of vortex meters is generally high, but it is crucial to ensure proper installation and calibration to maintain this accuracy. Replacement and maintenance costs are typically low due to the absence of moving parts, which reduces wear and tear .
