A Millwrights Guide to Motor/Pump Alignment, Second Edition

Calculated Numerical Quantity:
Throughout this book are calculated numerical quantities indicating mostly plus or minus shim activity or lateral moves. Apply the correct formulas for the occasion, plug accurate information into the formulas, and adhere to the presence (or absence) of minus signs.
Capscrews:
To a lay person the term is bolts. But in industry, if it s a bolting activity of significance, the term is capscrews or cap screws. Cap screws or capscrews sound the same to the ear in industry, but both add up to the understanding it s quality material and manufacture.
Captured/locked/frozen/anchored:
This is a rather forceful and defining term indicating that once a theoretical pivot point has been established that (in theory at least) it doesn t move again. The entire remainder of the alignment revolves around this pivot point. When you visualize the hub and spokes of a wagon wheel into the scene it soon becomes easily understandable.
Centerline (center line):
Both sound the same to the ear and in this text in describing the axis of a shaft, the term centerline is frequently used.
In theory, the centerline of a shaft (though invisible, intangible, and in reality non-existent) extends deep into infinity in 180 axial directions from the physical center of said shaft. (That s a rather lengthy dimension for a phenomenon that don t physically exist).
Centrifugal pump:
A fluid pump in which fluid enters the center (eye) of the pump impeller from the low pressure source of...
