Face indicator reading:
Providing said indicator was zeroed at a position 180 opposite the reading location and was monitored while in transit from to the zero to the reading position, a cognizant millwright can verbally or silently record the proper reading with voice or pen as applicable. If these precautions were not taken, turn to the final two pages in the Rim and Face chapter for a rather wordy scenario of why the indicator is to be monitored during transit. Begin with: ASSUME.
Face mounted indicator:
A dial indicator arranged having the plunger stem and button to ride against the face of a given coupling face. Usually at a position near the outer rim.
Face reading dial indicator:
Same definition as the above Face mounted indicator.
Face readings:
In shaft alignment, readings in plural taken on a face-mounted indicator (or indicators). Monitor the indicator as the unit makes its 180 turn so you can know if the reading is 0.007", 0.107", or minus .093" Got your attention?
Factory-cut shims:
Shims which are of varied thickness and cut in several standardized sizes and uniform shapes commensurate to varied bolt sizes. (Don t trust the stamped-on thickness). Measure it.
False reading:
A very long (and growing) list of things that will result in false readings on indicators will eventually include: The hold-down bolts (cap screws) were not tight, spongy (bird s nest) shims, not monitoring the indicators during the turn and missing by 0.100", leaning against...
