Magnet Type | A permanent magnet always exhibits magnetic properties, whether inside a magnetic field, or not. Permanent magnet materials are designated by Magnetic Materials Producers Association (MMPA) Class. Each addresses the relevant properties, characteristics and specifications of each material, and the established sub-grades. Historically recognized sub-grade descriptions (such as Alnico 1, 2, etc., or Ceramic 5, 8, etc.) are often referenced. The Brief Designation classifies each sub grade by the normal energy product and the typical intrinsic coercive force. For example, a material having a normal energy product of 5.0 mega gauss-oersteds (MGO) and an intrinsic coercive force of 2000 oersteds (2.0 key) would be assigned a Brief Designation of 5.01/2.0. Many times an IEC Grade Code will also be presented for cross-reference. | ||

NdFeB (Neodymium Iron Boron) | Neodymium iron boron, a rare earth magnet, is the most recent commercial addition to the family of modern magnet materials. Its general composition is Nd2Fe14B, often-abbreviated NdFeB. At room temperatures, NdFeB magnets exhibit the highest properties of all magnet materials. | ||
SmCo (Samarium Cobalt) | Samarium cobalt is manufactured in two compositions: Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17 - often referred to as the SmCo 1:5 or SmCo 2:17 types. 2:17 types, with higher Hci values, offer greater inherent stability than the 1:5 types. | ||
Ceramic (Ferrite) | Ceramic, also known as ferrites, magnets (general composition BaFe2O3 or SrFe2O3) have been commercialized since the 1950s and continue to be extensively used today due to their low cost. A special form of ceramic magnet is "flexible" material, made by bonding ceramic powder in a flexible binder. | ||
AlNiCo (Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt) | AlNiCo magnets (general composition Al-Ni-Co) were commercialized in the 1930s and are still extensively used today. | ||
Iron-Chromium-Cobalt | Iron-chromium-cobalt magnets offer the considerable advantage of being receptive to plastic deformation processing such as rolling and drawing. They can be used for compact, complex shapes that are difficult or impossible to achieve with other types of materials. | ||
