AlNiCo (Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt) Industrial Magnets
Description
AlNiCo industrial magnets are composed primarily of aluminum, nickel, and cobalt, with possible additions of copper, iron, and titanium. These magnets are known for their high flux output characteristics, which range from 6,700 to 13,500 Gauss. They are designed to provide a stable magnetic field and are often shaped in a way that allows for a curved magnetic field, such as the classic horseshoe shape.
Working Principle
AlNiCo magnets operate by aligning the magnetic domains within the material to create a strong magnetic field. The high Curie temperature of approximately 840°C allows these magnets to maintain their magnetic properties even at elevated temperatures. The low temperature coefficient of induction, at -0.02°C, ensures minimal flux loss with temperature changes, making them highly temperature stable. Despite their low coercive force, which indicates a lower resistance to demagnetization, AlNiCo magnets are useful in applications where a stable magnetic field is required over a wide temperature range.
Applications
AlNiCo magnets are used in various applications due to their temperature stability and ability to maintain a strong magnetic field. Specific examples include their use in brush DC motors, such as the 16DCP, 22DCP, and 22N48 models, where they provide reliable performance in severe temperature and environmental conditions. They are also utilized in military applications due to their high flux output and temperature stability.
Advantages over other Industrial Magnets
Compared to other industrial magnets, AlNiCo magnets offer several advantages. They have a very high Curie temperature and are extremely temperature stable, which is beneficial in applications requiring consistent performance across a wide temperature range. Additionally, they have high corrosion resistance, eliminating the need for surface treatments. While they have lower energy compared to rare earth magnets, they are a cost-efficient choice for many applications.
Limitations
One of the primary limitations of AlNiCo magnets is their low coercive force, which makes them more susceptible to demagnetization compared to other magnet types. They are also very hard and brittle, which means they cannot be milled or machined easily, except through abrasive grinding or electrical discharge machining (EDM).
Considerations
When considering AlNiCo magnets, it is important to factor in the initial costs, which are generally lower than those of rare earth magnets. Operating expenses are minimized due to their high durability and corrosion resistance, which reduce the need for maintenance and replacement. However, their low resistance to demagnetization requires careful handling and assembly, particularly in applications where magnetic stability is critical.
