Polyurethane (PU, PUR) Thermoset Adhesives
Thermoset adhesives are thermosetting polymers that are used to bond metallic or non-metallic substrates. They are cured using heat, pressure, or a combination of both. There exist several types of thermoset adhesives, and they are typically classified based on their chemical composition or polymer system. Polyurethane remains one of the most widely used types for several applications.
Polyurethanes (PU, PUR) thermoset adhesives are polymers composed of urethane links and formed by the reaction of various types of isocyanates with polyol. Depending on the composition, these adhesives can set solidly without being brittle or can remain rubbery and inflexible. Nevertheless, they offer numerous advantages over other common types of adhesives.
Polyurethane thermoset adhesives have higher load-bearing capacity compared to elastomers of equal hardness. They also outperform other adhesives in terms of abrasion resistance and can withstand temperatures as high as 248°F. In addition, PUR's major advantage over other adhesives is its ability to set in high moisture conditions.
Selection criteria
- Use temperature: describes the range of temperatures that the polyurethane thermoset adhesive can be exposed to without degradation of its properties.
- Tensile strength: it is defined as the maximum amount of stress required to break a cured polyurethane thermoset adhesive under tension loading test.
- Substrate: it is the base material in which the adhesive bonding process is conducted. Polyurethane thermoset adhesives are compatible with a wide range of materials and can bond dissimilar materials, for example, metal to wood.
- Features: common options include anti-static, flame retardant, and EMI shielding properties. PU thermoset adhesive with antistatic property can reduce the buildup of static electricity, while those with EMI shielding property provides shielding from electromagnetic interference.
- Coefficient of thermal expansion: describes the fractional change in the size of a cured polyurethane thermoset adhesive per degree change in temperature at a constant pressure.
Applications
Polyurethane thermoset adhesive has a lot of desirable properties that make it suitable for use in a wide range of industries. Their high creep resistance makes them perfect for the aerospace industry to bond composite structures and metallic components. Most PURs are also waterproof, making them suitable for several outdoor applications, such as in building and construction.
