Planning Using Primavera SureTrak Project Manager Version 3.0 Revised 2006

Constraints are used to impose logic on activities that may not be realistically scheduled with logic links. We will deal in detail with four constraints:
Start constraint Early
Finish constraint Late
Expected Finish
Float constraint As late as possible.
These are the minimum number of constraints that are required to effectively schedule your project.
Start constraint Early (also known as start no earlier than" or early start constraint) is used when the start date of an activity is known or known approximately. SureTrak will not allow the activity s early start prior to this date.
Finish Constraint Late (also known as finish no later" or late finish constraint) is used when the latest finish date is stipulated. SureTrak will not allow the activity s late finish after this date.
Expected Finish is used to calculate the remaining duration. SureTrak will calculate the remaining duration as the duration from the Early Start date, or Data Date if the activity is in progress, and the assigned Expected Finish date.
Float constraint As late as possible (also known as zero free float") is used to make the activity finish immediately prior to its successors. A classical example is the just in time" delivery of materials before installation. This constraint operates differently to the Microsoft Project As late as possible constraint which consumes all Total Float and will delay all successor activities with Total Float by setting the Early Dates to equal the Late Dates. Therefore...
