Chapter 17: Resource Leveling

Overview

Resource Leveling is a SureTrak function allowing the optimization of resource use by delaying activities until resources become available and thus reduce the peaks in resource requirements. This feature may extend the length of a project should you choose to use this option.

The leveling function should be only be employed by novice users with extreme caution. It requires the scheduler to have a very good understanding of how SureTrak operates. Leveling increases the complexity of a schedule and requires a different approach to the construction of a schedule. Leveling requires the user to have a solid understanding of how SureTrak resourcing functions calculate before attempting to use leveling.

Your ability to understand how SureTrak operates is important for you to be able to utilize the leveling function with confidence on larger schedules. It is recommended that you practice with small simple schedules to gain experience in leveling and develop an understand the leveling issues before attempting leveling a complex schedule.

This chapter will outline the SureTrak Resource Leveling functions including:

  • Resource Level form,

  • Resource form,

  • Guidelines on Leveling and

  • What to look for if resources are not leveling.

17.1 Level Form

The Leveling form allows you to nominate most of the Leveling prerequisites. Select Tools, Level to open the Level form:

  • Automatic resource leveling - levels the schedule each time the schedule is recalculated.
