Ship Design and Construction, Volume II

Chapter 44: Advanced Marine Surface Craft

Philippe Goubault John Allison

44.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter covers the main types of Advanced Marine Surface Craft (AMCS), namely: monohulls, multihulls, small waterplane area hulls, hydrofoils, hovercraft and wing-in-ground effect craft; each in a separate subsection in Section 44.2.

Janes High Speed Marine Craft (1), which is published annually, covers all known types of AMSC and provides all kinds of useful information for the designer of such craft, including photos, line diagrams, and general data. However, there is no analysis or discussion of the design of these craft.

44.1.1 Mission

The description and examples in this Section are meant to illustrate the state-of-the-art regarding the advanced concepts mentioned in this chapter. These examples are merely a snapshot of the state-of-the-art at the time of writing, which keeps evolving with time. It is expected that there will be continuing progress in this area. It is probable that new concepts will be developed when readers use this book. Nevertheless, the classification proposed for the various type of lift will be applicable and will enable the reader to assess the proposed concept against similar existing advanced craft.

Advanced Marine Surface Craft are destined for many missions, but will include a requirement for higher speed and better seakeeping than can be achieved by conventional hulls.

In the case of military applications, missions of fast patrol boats are most commonly found to use advanced hull forms, while commercial applications encompass high-speed ferries.
