Ship Design and Construction, Volume II

Chapter 52: Heavy-Lift Ships

Frank van Hoorn

52.1 DESCRIPTION

52.1.1 General

Heavy-lift transport ships form a particular sector of the dry cargo ships. These specialized ships are capable of transporting heavy and awkward cargoes, ranging from locomotives to complete floating production units. Most are custom designed and built; some are converted from other types of vessels. Based on general appearance and capability (which are generally closely related), these heavy-lift ships can be subdivided into 4 main categories, 1) project cargo ships, 2) open deck cargo ships, 3) dock ships, and 4) semi-submersible ships.

Each of these categories will be described in detail. Each category has its own target cargoes. Competition and market conditions can blur the lines between these target cargoes. The heavy-lift market is a volatile market, which requires continuous adaptations by the heavy-lift shipowners and operators. Interestingly, most heavy-lift shipowners are located in Western Europe and the Dutch in particular play a dominant role in the heavy-lift industry.

The heavy-lift ships described herein are not to be confused with crane or derrick ships: large floating units equipped with cranes, capable of lifting 1000-14 000 tonnes. These crane vessels are specialized ships and barges used for offshore construction and installation.

The information herein is believed to be correct and current as of late 2002. Changes may have occurred since then. Older ships may have been sold, re-named, converted, or scrapped. New ships may have been built and added to the world fleet of heavy-lift ships.
