jackup drilling

Oil & Gas. a process of offshore drilling using a self-contained combination drilling rig (jackup rig) and floating barge, fitted with long support legs that can be raised or lowered independently of each other.

Jahre Viking

Oil & Gas. T.T. Jahre Viking, the world s largest oil supertanker (in fact the largest floating object on earth), over 1500 feet long and able to carry more than 4 million barrels of crude oil.

Jessica

Environment. an Ecuadorean tanker that ran aground on rocks off the Galapagos Islands in 2001, releasing about two-thirds of its cargo of 240,000 gallons of oil. The accident occurred in the prophetically named Shipwreck Bay, outside the harbor of San Cristobal Island.

Physics. 1. a continuous stream of concentrated and well-defined incompressible or compressible fluid (e.g., water, fuel), emitted by a nozzle or other such opening of a small size that compresses (and thus accelerates) the flow of the fluid. 2. any device that is powered by such a stream of fluid. 3. Transportation. specifically, a jet aircraft or jet engine (see below).
