Coal. a dark brown to black, amorphous, gel-like constituent of coal, derived from the decay or degradation of vegetable matter.
ULR
ultralight rail.
ultimate analysis
Coal. the determination by chemical methods of the proportionate amounts of various constituents of coal, by determining the percentages of the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Other elements that may be present are considered impurities and reported as ash.
ultimate recovery
Oil & Gas. the estimated total volume of oil or gas that a reservoir will yield during its productive lifetime.
ultracapacitor
Electricity. an electrochemical device that stores electricity through capacitive charging and that is capable of providing high power in a compact size and mass.
ultra-high voltage
Electricity. a term for voltages greater than 800 kV.
ultralarge crude carrier (ULCC)
Oil & Gas. a supertanker; an oil tanker of the largest class, having a gross register tonnage in excess of 250,000 tons.

Transportation. a form of light rail transportation employing self-powered individual vehicles of lighter weight and smaller capacity, moving on rails set in existing roadways.
