Stephenson, George
1781 1848, English engineer who developed the first successful steam locomotive (1815). He made important advances in railway design, including the use of tunnels and embankments, and malleable iron rails instead of cast iron. He also devised a miner s safety lamp at about the same time as did Sir Humphry DAVY.
