vacuum
Physics. 1. in theory, a region that is completely devoid of any form of matter; a totally empty space. 2. in practical terms, an enclosed region of space in which pressure has been reduced far enough below normal atmospheric pressure that processes occurring within the region are unaffected by the residual matter.
vacuum evaporation
Electricity. the depo sition of thin films of semiconductor ma terial by means of the evaporation of element al sources in a vacuum.
vacuum gasoil
Oil & Gas. a feedstock for fluid catalytic conversion units, used to make gasoline, no. 2 heating oil, and other by-products.
vacuum heating
HVAC. a steam-heating system in which a vacuum pump induces a pressure gradient to induce a return flow of air in the return pipes.
vacuum tube
Communication. an electron tube that has been evacuated so that its electrical characteristics are essentially unaffected by the presence of residual gas or vapor; formerly in widespread use throughout the electronics industry, e.g., in radios and television sets, but now largely replaced by the transistor.
vacuum zero
Physics. the energy of an electron at rest in empty space; used as a reference level.
