Dictionary of Energy

Materials. a widely used industrial process for the synthesis of ammonia by direct combination of nitrogen and hydrogen in the presence of iron catalysts; the basis of modern fertilizer production. [Developed by German chemists Fritz Haber, 1868 1934, and Carl Bosch, 1874 1940.]
Earth Science. a direct, thermally driven, zonally symmetric circulation that consists of an equator-directed movement of air from 30 north or south latitude, with rising wind components near the equator, pole-directed flow aloft, and descending components at 30 latitude again; it was initially proposed as an explanation for trade winds. Also, Hadley cell. [Described by English meteorologist George Hadley, 1685 1768.]
Physics. any particle of the largest family of elementary particles, which interact with each other through strong interactions, usually produce additional hadrons in a collision at high energy, and are roughly spherical.
1879 1968, German physical chemist who (with Fritz Strassman) discovered the process of fission in uranium and thorium (1938). This immediately contributed to the discovery of chain reactions and the development of nuclear weapons and ultimately nuclear power.
Nuclear. the time required for one half of a radioactive sample to decay.
