1838 1916, Austrian physicist who established that one of the most important variables affecting aerodynamic behavior is the speed of the airflow over a body relative to the speed of sound (the MACH NUMBER).

Measurement. an expression of the speed at which an object is moving through a fluid medium according to the MACH NUMBER. An aircraft traveling at Mach 1 is moving at the speed of sound, Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound, and so on.
