Harnessing AutoCAD 2007

This chapter introduces some of the basic commands and concepts in AutoCAD that can be used to complete a simple drawing. The project exercise drawings (on the accompanying CD under Exercise Files for Chapter 2) used in this chapter may appear relatively uncomplicated, but for the newcomer to AutoCAD it presents ample challenges. This chapter provides useful lessons in drawing setup, as well as in creating and editing objects. Once you learn how to access and use the basic commands, how to find your way around the screen, and how AutoCAD makes use of coordinate geometry, you can apply these skills to the chapters containing more advanced drawings and projects. After completing this chapter, you will be able to do the following:
Construct geometric figures with LINE, RECTANGLE, CIRCLE, and ARC commands
Use coordinate systems
Use various object selection methods
Use the ERASE command
AutoCAD gives you an ample variety of drawing elements, called objects. It also provides you with many ways to generate each object in your drawing. You will learn about the properties of these objects as you progress in this text. It is important to keep in mind that the examples in this text of how to generate the various lines, circles, arcs, and other objects are not always the only methods available. You are invited, even challenged, to find other more expedient methods to perform the tasks demonstrated in the lessons. You will progress at a better rate if you make an...
