Chapter 18: The Tablet and Digitizing

INTRODUCTION

A digitizing tablet (digitizer) can be used to trace geometry on an overlaid paper into a drawing file. It can also be used to invoke commands from an appropriately configured overlay. Using the Wintab driver, the tablet pointer can be used instead of a mouse as a system pointer, to choose menu items and drawing objects, or to interact with the operating system.

The digitizer must first be configured and then calibrated. When configured, areas of the tablet surface are assigned as command input areas and a screen-pointing area. When calibrated, the digitizer can be used to trace geometry from an overlaid paper drawing, map or image into a drawing.

You can alternate between using the tablet uncalibrated, as a system pointer (Tablet mode off) or calibrated, for digitizing a drawing (Tablet mode on) by clicking the Tablet button on the status bar. After completing this chapter, you will be able to do the following:

  • Configure the tablet areas

  • Calibrate the tablet for digitizing

TABLET OPERATION

When a digitizing tablet, and an overlay have been installed and properly set up to work together, you can use the digitizer's attached puck on the tablet surface to achieve the following results.

Normal operation The most common use of a tablet is to allow the user to move the puck and press the pick button while pointing to one of the various commands or symbols on a preprinted overlay, and be able to invoke that particular command or initiate a program...
