Common-Mode Choke Inductors, Coils, and Chokes
Description
Common-mode choke inductors, also known as common-mode chokes or coils, are components designed to suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) in electrical circuits. They consist of two or more coils of insulated wire wound on a single magnetic core, which allows them to filter out unwanted noise while allowing the desired signal to pass through with minimal power loss.
Working Principle
Common-mode chokes operate by presenting high impedance to noise signals while allowing the desired signals to pass through easily. This is achieved by winding the coils in such a way that the magnetic fields generated by the desired currents cancel each other out within the core. This cancellation effect results in a high inductance that effectively attenuates noise signals. The chokes are particularly effective when the desired currents are equal and opposite on two separate conductors, as the reactance is only effective against the noise signal .
Applications
Common-mode chokes are widely used in various industrial, electronics, and telecommunications applications to suppress noise and EMI on power supply cables and signal lines. Specific examples include their use in LED lighting, electronic ballasts, and switch-mode power supplies, where they help filter and smooth the output, preventing noise from feeding back onto the power line. They also facilitate compliance with regulatory standards such as those set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) .
Advantages over other Inductors, Coils, and Chokes
Common-mode chokes offer the advantage of filtering two or more lines of current simultaneously using a single magnetic core. This capability makes them particularly useful in applications with large current flows, such as AC/DC power supply lines and video signal lines, where they effectively suppress noise and current fluctuations .
Limitations
One limitation of common-mode chokes is that they are only effective when the desired currents are equal and opposite on two separate conductors. They are not suitable for filtering noise from a single conductor, which requires a differential mode inductor .
Considerations
When selecting a common-mode choke, several factors should be considered to ensure optimal performance. These include determining the impedance required to filter the noise, ascertaining the frequency range of the noise, and establishing the amount of current the choke must manage. Additionally, the choice of core material can impact the initial cost and performance, with options ranging from low-cost manganese zinc ferrites to high-end amorphous and nanocrystalline materials .
