%LEL Gas Sensors
Description
%LEL Gas Sensors are designed to detect the presence of combustible gases in the air by measuring the concentration of these gases as a percentage of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL). These sensors provide an advance warning of potentially hazardous situations by indicating when the concentration of flammable gases approaches the LEL, which is the minimum concentration required for combustion to occur.
Working Principle
%LEL Gas Sensors typically operate using catalytic or infrared detection technologies. Catalytic sensors work on the principle that combustible gases, when oxidized on a catalytic bead, produce heat, which changes the resistance of the bead. This change is measured electrically, providing a signal proportional to the gas concentration. These sensors are particularly useful because they can detect gas concentrations below the LEL, providing early warnings before reaching dangerous levels .
Applications
%LEL Gas Sensors are widely used in various industrial settings where monitoring of flammable gases is critical. Specific examples include oil and gas production and refining, chemical processing, waste treatment, pulp and paper manufacturing, metal-treating, drying ovens, and landfills .
Advantages over other Gas Sensors
Catalytic %LEL Gas Sensors offer several advantages over other types of gas sensors. They are highly responsive and have a proven track record of reliability in detecting combustible gases at or below the LEL. They are also versatile and can be used in a broad variety of field application environments .
Limitations
One limitation of %LEL Gas Sensors, particularly those using catalytic detection, is that they may not be suitable for detecting hydrogen gas. Additionally, they require a certain level of oxygen to function correctly, which can be a limitation in oxygen-deficient environments .
Considerations
When considering %LEL Gas Sensors, it is important to evaluate factors such as initial costs, operating expenses, and maintenance requirements. Catalytic sensors generally require regular calibration and maintenance to ensure accuracy and reliability. They are durable but may have higher operating expenses due to the need for periodic replacement of sensor elements. Infrared sensors, on the other hand, may have higher initial costs but offer lower maintenance requirements and longer operational life .
