Combustible Gas Gas Sensors
Description
Combustible gas sensors are devices designed to detect the presence of combustible gases in the air. They provide a signal indicating the concentration of these gases, which can be used to trigger alarms or other safety measures to prevent hazardous situations.
Working Principle
Combustible gas sensors typically operate on the principle of catalytic combustion. A heated catalyst, often a coated wire coil, is used to burn the selected gas. As the gas combusts, the temperature of the wire increases, leading to a change in its electrical resistance. This change is measured using a Wheatstone bridge circuit, which transforms the temperature change into a sensor signal. This signal can then be used to activate alarms and initiate fire preventative actions .
Applications
Combustible gas sensors are widely used in various industries due to their reliability and effectiveness. Specific applications include oil and gas production and refining, chemical processing, waste treatment, pulp and paper manufacturing, metal-treating, drying ovens, and landfills .
Advantages over other Gas Sensors
Catalytic gas sensors are robust, economical, and reliable. They are self-compensating to changes in environmental conditions such as humidity, pressure, and temperature, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. Additionally, they are easy to install, calibrate, and use, and can operate for years with minimal maintenance .
Limitations
One of the limitations of catalytic gas sensors is their susceptibility to sensor poisoning, which can occur with frequent or continuous exposure to high concentrations of gas. This can shorten the sensor's lifespan. Additionally, while they can monitor a wide range of combustible gases and vapors, they are not specific to any single gas, such as ammonia .
Considerations
When considering the use of combustible gas sensors, it is important to evaluate initial costs, operating expenses, and maintenance requirements. Catalytic sensors are generally cost-effective and have a long operational life, but they require periodic gas calibrations to ensure accurate operation. Durability is a strength, as they are designed to withstand various environmental conditions, but accuracy can be affected by sensor poisoning over time .
