Chapter 4: Space Planning and Mass Modeling

INTRODUCTION

Space planning is a necessary component of the design of any building. One approach is to study the space arrangement of an existing building or existing floor plans to develop summaries of spaces allocated per function. Another approach is to sketch or layout a space diagram to determine the quantity, location and traffic between spaces. Walls can be added to enclose the spaces of the space diagram or you can develop mass elements for the study of a building shape that will contain the spaces. This chapter will also include the development of mass elements and groups to represent the shape of the building.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this chapter, you will be able to

  • Create and Modify 2D, Extrusion and Freeform spaces using the SpaceAutoGenerate and SpaceAdd tools.

  • Divide and combine spaces using the LineworkDivide and LineworkMerge commands.

  • Summarize the spaces and zones of the drawing with the SpaceQuery, Zones and Space Evaluation commands.

  • Create and edit mass elements and mass groups.

  • Create a Drape mass element and use the Model Explorer to create and edit mass elements and groups.

GEOMETRY FORMS OF SPACES

The content of Chapter 2 and 3 allowed you to develop skills in drawing walls and the details of wall styles. The first part of this chapter will apply space planning of such existing floor plans that have been developed. The SpaceAutoGenerate tool allows you to create spaces from existing walls of a floor plan. When you choose the SpaceAutoGenerate command, you are...
