Military Standards Resistors

Description

Military standards resistors are precision components designed to meet stringent military specifications for reliability and performance. These resistors are used to control the flow of electrical current in circuits, ensuring that the current remains within specified limits. They are built to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, vibrations, and humidity.

Working Principle

Military standards resistors operate by providing a precise resistance to the flow of electrical current. The resistance value is determined by the material and construction of the resistor. For example, thin-film resistors use a resistive metallic paste stenciled onto a base, while foil resistors feature a metal foil applied to a ceramic substrate. These construction methods ensure high stability, low noise, and precise resistance values. The resistors are useful because they maintain their performance characteristics under extreme conditions, making them reliable for critical applications.

Applications

Military standards resistors are used in a variety of high-stakes applications. Specific examples include missile and air flight controls, communication systems, ground support radar, and guidance and navigation controls . These resistors are also employed in industrial applications such as rail charging stations, switchgear, motor controls, and high voltage power supplies .

Advantages over other Resistors

Military standards resistors offer several advantages over other types of resistors. For instance, thin-film resistors provide precision tolerances to ±0.1% and a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) to ±25 ppm/°C, which surpasses the outgassing requirements of ASTM-E595 . Foil resistors, on the other hand, offer high stability, non-inductance, low capacitance, and low noise without sacrificing accuracy and speed . These characteristics make them more reliable and suitable for high-precision applications compared to thick-film or wirewound resistors.

Limitations

Despite their advantages, military standards resistors have some limitations. Thick-film resistors, for example, are much noisier compared to foil and thin-film devices, making them less suitable for applications requiring high precision and durability . Additionally, ceramic resistors can create electrical noise, which makes them unsuitable for sensitive radio receivers and transmitters .

Considerations

When selecting military standards resistors, several factors should be considered. Initial costs can be higher due to the stringent manufacturing processes and materials used. However, the operating expenses may be lower in the long run due to their high reliability and low failure rates. Durability is a significant advantage, as these resistors are designed to withstand extreme conditions. Accuracy is another critical factor, with some resistors offering tolerances as low as ±0.05% . Replacement and maintenance costs are generally lower because of their long-term stability and reduced support requirements .
