Chapter 9: Rendering

  • Cameras go hand-in-hand with rendering. Sometimes you just need to change a few camera parameters to get an illusion of depth.

Rendering is the easiest task in 3ds Max, in most cases just a matter of a few clicks. In this chapter, we ll look at ways to enhance your rendering experience while keeping the process fast and easy.

Rendering Basics

The render scene dialog is your main resource for rendering settings. Choose Render menu > Render Scene to open the dialog.

While this dialog contains numerous parameters, there are a few that are crucial to creating the type of rendering you want.


Figure 1: To prepare for rendering, your first stop is the Time Output group in the Render Scene dialog. To render an animated sequence, choose Active Time Segment or enter a range of frames next to Range.

Figure 2: Your next stop is the Output Size group. Choose from resolution presets, or enter a custom Width and Height.

Figure 3: If you re rendering an animated sequence, be sure to click Files in the Render Output group and enter a file name. Otherwise, your animation will get rendered to nowhere.

Figure 4: To accurately show what portion of a viewport will get rendered, right-click the viewport name and turn on the Show Safe Frame option.
