Video and Media Servers: Technology and Applications, Second Edition

Chapter 22: Issues in Video/Media Server Performance

Overview

Capacity, storage, memory. Three similar terms regularly associated as a primary metric in video server specifications. The terms understandably are the easiest to market, yet seldom do they accurately describe overall system specification. As video server systems become more sophisticated, more widely accepted, and more diversified in their applications, users are provided with a greater number of options and configurations with which to deploy the server into their facility. To satisfy the understanding of capabilities and expectations, users need to have broader understandings of the video servers' differences and capabilities.

Terminology is important to defining capability. While standards for subsystems such as RAID arrays, MPEG-2 or DV compression, component digital interfaces and the like carry well-established industry nomenclatures, most of the video server systems carry marketing terms that define their functions, options and capacities.

This chapter will look into the issues and terminologies that developed over the relatively short life span of the video/media server.

The modern video server now takes form in a number of variants. Throughout this book, the word "video" is held in universal terminology, generally meaning the combination of video (the picture image portion) plus audio (the aural or sound portion) plus the expected, and usually concealed, aspects of frame identification (i.e., SMPTE 12M timecode) and control (generally a device interface such as RS422).

Yet, that definition is insufficient to cover all of the capabilities we've begun to see and expect from a "video" server. Therefore, in order to cover the broadening definition of capabilities,...
