Control Valves

Chapter 10.11 - Control Valve Features: Valve Packing

Valve Packing

The packing box is the chamber in a valve bonnet which surrounds the stem. It contains the packing which seals against leakage around the valve plug stem. Packing materials are chosen according to the valve service conditions. A satisfactory packing must seal without leakage during a long useful life span. To achieve this goal, a packing material should be non-abrasive, have a low coefficient of friction, not adhere to other materials and be both chemically stable and inert within the service temperature range. It also must not disintegrate or crumble and should be impermeable and pliable. Chapter 11 includes a detailed discussion of packing material selection.

It is practically impossible for any known material to meet all these requirements. Therefore a satisfactory packing is a compromise situation in which engineering judgment is used for each application.
