Control Valves

Chapter 10.24 - Control Valve Features: Valve Bypasses

Valve Bypasses

Valve bypasses perform the function of equalizing pressure. They are actually a passage for the fluid, permitting a portion or all of the fluid to flow around its normal pass flow channel. Bypasses can be either internal or external to the valve.

There are several arrangements for bypass installation:

  • From the valve body to the upstream side.
  • From the upstream side of the valve to the downstream side.
  • From the valve body to the downstream side.

Bypasses installed internally perform the function of communicating the body cavity pressure to either the upstream or downstream side of the disc; often internal bypasses are equipped with a relief or check valve to perform specific functions.

Figure 10-48 illustrates a bypass line for a double acting piston actuator to equalize pressure between the two piston compartments and the port E of the trip valve. This arrangement is used to offer "fail-safe" action along with a volume tank for double acting actuators.
