Chapter 10.14 - Control Valve Features: Packing to Combat Fuaitive Emissions

Packing to Combat Fuaitive Emissions

12_Chapter_10-27.jpgThe Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 require reduced leakage from all elements in chemical plants and in all installations handling noxious fluids. Control valves are a significant potential source of leakage from the dynamic stem seal.

Recent environmental regulations specify performance, not equipment. End-users can select their approach to reduce emissions. The problem area lies in the fact that the valve stem must move for the valve to work! Wherever there is movement, there exists a potential for leakage. Unlike static leak sources (joints and flanges can be made leak-tight by better maintenance), valve stem packing requires attention and proper upkeep to control emissions. The valve leakage rate must be maintained below 500 parts per million (ppm) of hazardous emissions. Figure 10-23 illustrates an emission-free packing for rotary valves.
