   Synthetic Rubber Materials (Thermosets)      The descriptions of the materials and their characteristics to follow are typical. Exact specifications should be clarified by the vendor, as chemical and physical properties of an O-ring can differ based on manufacturing technique.

   Butadiene Rubber (BR) / Polybutadiene       Butadiene rubber (BR) is a monomer used in the production of the synthetic rubber polymer polybutadiene.  Polybutadiene is a commonly-used polymer system with dielectric potting compounds and coatings. It can be combined with other rubber polymers to form flexible sealants. Polybutadiene remains flexible even at low temperatures.  Trade names include Ameripol CB® (Ameripol Synpol), Taktene® (Bayer Corp.), and Budene® (Goodyear Rubber Products). 
   Butyl Rubber (IIR)       Butyl is a common term for the isobutylene isoprene elastomer. It is known for its resistance to water, steam, alkalis, and oxygenated solvents. It has low gas permeation and is capable of providing high-energy absorption (dampening) and good hot tear strength. The range of suggested operating temperatures is -75° to 250° F. 
   Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM)       Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM) provides excellent ozone, oxidation, sunlight (color degradation), and weather resistance. They are also capable of providing resistance to alkalis and acids. Suggested operating temperature (-60° to 300° F).  Hypalon®, a CSM material, is a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers. 
   Epichlorohydrin Rubber (ECH, ECO)       Good gas impermeability and maintains physical properties over a wide temperature while maintaining resistance to petroleum oils. Ozone, oxidation, weathering, and sunlight resistances are other qualities. Suggested operating temperatures (-60° to 300° F). Trade names include Gechron® and Hydrin® (Zeon Chemicals), and Herclor® (Hercules Inc.), 
   Ethylene propylene rubber (EPR, EPDM, EP,EPT)       Ethylene propylene rubber is a copolymer that offers good resistance to sunlight, weathering and ozone. It has poor resistance to petroleum oils and fuel, but features good heat and compression set resistance. The range of suggested operating temperatures is -70° to 275° F.  Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is a terpolymer that offers good resistance to sunlight, weathering and ozone. It has poor resistance to petroleum oils and fuel, but features good heat and compression set resistance. The range of suggested operating temperatures is -70° to 275° F. EPDM trade names include Nordel® (Dupont Dow Elastomers), Vistalon® (Exxon Mobil Chemical), Epsyn® (DSM Elastomers), Keltan® (DSM Elastomers), Royalene® (Uniroyal Chemical),Epcar® (B.F. Goodrich), and Buna BP® (Bayer Corp.). 
   Fluoroelastomer (FKM)       Fluoroelastomers (FKM) are a range of tailorable fluoropolymer elastomers. They are normally black and have high heat, oil and chemical resistance but indifferent low temperature performance. With the exception of Kalrez® (Dupont Dow Elastomers), perfluorinated elastomer, they are about the most highly temperature resistant of all commercially available elastomers. Trade names include Viton® (Dupont Dow Elastomers), Fluorel® and Kel-F® (3M), Aflas™ (Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.), and Technoflon® (Montedison). 
   Fluorosilicone (FVMQ, FMQ, FPM, FSI)       The mechanical and physical properties of fluorosilicone are very similar to silicone; however, fluorosilicone offers improved fuel and mineral oil resistance but poor hot-air resistance in comparison. The range of suggested operating temperatures is -100° to 350° F. Fluorosilicone trade names include FSE® (General Electric Co.), Silastic® (Dow Chemical), and Sylon® (Dyneon Co.). 
   Nitrile Rubber (NBR, HNBR, HSN )       Nitrile provides good resistance to petroleum hydrocarbons and fuels. It is used widely with most oils, hydraulic fluids, and alcohol. Many compound variations are available for specific applications.  Trade names of NBR include Breon® (BP Chemicals), Chemigum® (Goodyear), Hycar® (B F Goodrich), Krynac® (Polysar Ltd.), Nipol® (Zeon Chemicals), Nysyn® NBR, (DSM Elastomers), Paracril® (Uniroyal Chemical), and Perbunan® (Mobay).  Trade names of HNBR include Therban® (Mobay), Tornac® (Polysar), and Zetpol® (Nippon Zeon Company). 
   Perfluoroelastomer (FFKM, FFPM)       Perfluoroelastomers are a high temperature and chemical resistance material. It has a low compression set and retains its elasticity and recovery properties better than other high temperature elastomers. Suggested operating temperature (-40° to 600° F). Trade names include Kalrez®, (DuPont Dow), Isolat® (Dowty Seals), Chemraz® (Green Tweed & Co), Parofluor® (Parker Hannifin), and Simriz® (Simrit) 
   Polyacrylate (ACM)       Polyacrylate elastomers are well suited for use with extreme pressure (EP) lubricants and have high resistance to oxidation and ozone. Polyacrylates are not recommended for dry running applications. Suggested operating temperature (-25° to 350° F). Trade names include Cyanacryl® (American Cyanamid), Krylene® (Polystar), HyTemp® (BF Goodrich), and Thiacril® (Uniroyal). 
   Polychloroprene (CR) (Neoprene)       Polychloroprene (CR), also referred to as Neoprene, is a synthetic rubber that resists degradation from sun, ozone, and weather. It performs well in contact with oils and many chemicals. Neoprene remains useful over a wide temperature range, displays outstanding physical toughness, and resists burning inherently better than exclusively hydrocarbon rubbers. Neoprene also offers resistance to damage caused by flexing and twisting. Suggested operating temperature (-45° to 230° F). Trade names include Neoprene (DuPont Dow), Baypren® (Mobay), and Butachlor® (Ditsugil). 
   Polyisoprene (IR)       Natural rubber is based on polyisoprene or isoprene chemical systems. Synthetic or man-made versions of isoprene are also available.  Trade names include  Ameripol SN® (Ameripol Synpol), and Natsyn® (Goodyear Rubber Products). 
   Polysulfide Rubber (PSR)       Polysulfide rubber (PSR) is a synthetic rubber made by the reaction of sodium polysulfide and an organic dichloride.  Polysulfide rubber is resistant to light, oils and solvents.  Thiokol®, a polysulfide ruber, is a trade mark of Toray Fine Chemicals CO. 
   Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)       Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an insoluble compound that exhibits a high degree of chemical resistance and a low coefficient of friction. It is sometimes marketed in proprietary classes of materials such as Teflon®, a registered trademark of DuPont Dow Elastomers. 
   Silicone Rubber (SiR)       Silicones are polymers in which organics groups, such as methyl and phenyl groups are bonded to the silicone atoms in chains of inorganic siloxanes (-Si-O-Si-). Their properties include heat, cold and weather resistance, electrical insulation, release, water repellency and defoaming. 
   Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR)       Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) offers good resistance to petroleum hydrocarbons and fuels. It is widely used with most oils, hydraulic fluids, and alcohol. Many compound variations are available for specific applications. The range of suggested operating temperatures is -30° to 275° F.  Trade names include Ameripol Synpol® (Ameripol Synpol), Stereon® (Firestone Tire & Rubber), Plioflex® (Goodyear Rubber Products), and Krynol® (Polysar).

   Melt-Processible Rubber (MPR)       Melt-processible rubber (MPR) is an alternative to vulcanized rubber and soft thermoplastic elastomers.  Melt-processible rubbers exhibit high durability as well as abrasion, chemical, oil and environmental resistance. 
   Thermoplastic Polyolefine (TPO)       Thermoplastic polyolefin are a type of Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) that exhibit resistance to chemicals and suitability for a wide use of applications.  Trade names include Maxtel (MRC Polymers), Dexplex® (D&S Polymers), and Hifax® (Montell). 
   Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU)       Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) is a type of Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE).  Thermoplastic Polyurethane is a diverse class of materials exhibiting good elongation, recovery and toughness properties. They are flexible and have good abrasion resistance. (NOTE: The urethanes of the plastics industry are so named because the repeating units of their structures resemble the chemical urethane.) Trade names include Texin® (Bayer), Adiprene® and Vibrathane® (Uniroyal Chemical), Estane® (B F Goodrich), Genthane® (General Tire and Rubber), Millathane®, Morthane® (Morton), Isoplast® and Pellethane® (Dow Chemical). 
   Thermoplastic Elastomer Polyester-Ether (TEEE)       Thermoplastic Elastomer Polyester-Ether (TEEE)  is a type of Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) and is used for parts requiring flex fatigue resistance and broad use temperature. It is strongly resistant to tearing, flex-cut growth, creep and abrasion. Their chemical properties make them highly resistant to hydrocarbons and many other fluids. Trade names include Hytrel® (DuPont) and Arnitel® (DSM). 
   Polyether Block Amide (PEBA)       Polyether Block Amide (PEBA) is a type of Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE).  PEBA has high flexibility, impact, fatigue and chemical resistance.  Trade names include Pebax® (Altochem). 
   Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (TPV)       Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are a type of thermoplastic elastomers. TPVs contain a fully-cured rubber phase (usually EPDM) in a matrix of thermoplastic (usually polypropylene).  Trade names include Alfater® XL (Alfagomma S.p,A), Excelink® (JSR), HiLast® (HiTech Polymers), J-Prene® (J-Von), Keltalloy® (Alliance Alloys), Luna® (Solvay Engineering Polymers), Miraprene® (Schulman), Nitrovin® (V-Chem Corporation), Novalast® (Nova Polymers), Sarlink® (DSM), Uniprene® (Teknor Apex), Versalloy® (Alliance Alloys), Vulton® (Technical Polymers LLC), and Zeotherm® (Zeon Chemicals).
