Description
Isolation transformers are electrical devices designed to transfer electrical power from a source to a device while isolating the powered device from the power source. This isolation is achieved through the use of separate primary and secondary windings, which are not electrically connected. The primary purpose of these transformers is to enhance safety by preventing electric shock and reducing electrical noise.
Working Principle
Isolation transformers operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction. They consist of two coils, the primary and secondary, which are wound around a common core. When an alternating current (AC) passes through the primary coil, it creates a magnetic field that induces a voltage in the secondary coil. This process allows the transfer of electrical energy without a direct electrical connection between the input and output, providing electrical isolation. This isolation is beneficial for reducing electromagnetic interference and improving power quality by preventing current leakage and arcing.
Applications
Isolation transformers are used in a variety of applications where electrical isolation is crucial. Specific examples include:
- Medical Devices: They are used in medical equipment such as MRI and CAT scan machines to ensure patient safety by isolating the equipment from the power source.
- Audio Equipment: Isolation transformers are employed in audio amplifiers and speakers to prevent ground loops and reduce noise.

Advantages over other Power Transformers
Isolation transformers offer several advantages over other types of power transformers, such as autotransformers. Unlike autotransformers, which do not provide electrical isolation, isolation transformers ensure complete separation between the input and output circuits, enhancing safety by preventing electric shock. Additionally, they are effective in reducing electromagnetic interference, which is not a feature of autotransformers.
Limitations
One limitation of isolation transformers is their inability to work with direct current (DC) signals. They are designed for AC signals, and any DC component must be converted to AC before it can be processed by the transformer. This requirement can add complexity and cost to systems that need to handle both AC and DC signals.

When considering the use of isolation transformers, several factors should be taken into account:
